The U.S. Cotton Trust Protocol was launched in 2020 to establish new standards in sustainable cotton cultivation. This program provides measurable goals and metrics in six key sustainability areas for U.S. cotton, including soil carbon, water management, and greenhouse gas emissions. As the only system offering supply chain transparency at the article level, the Trust Protocol drives change in the textile industry by encouraging brands and retailers to commit to sourcing 100 percent of their cotton from sustainable sources by 2025 and promoting participation in sustainable cotton cultivation programs. The aim is to enhance sustainable cotton uptake, reduce water usage, and improve water quality and soil health.
